In another session focusing on the cultural benefits that nature provides to people, panelists will present novel approaches to studying and characterizing land-based cultural services. For example, forest-dwellers, fishers, and birdwatchers’ identities all depend on forests, fish, and birds respectively. We also derive recreational benefits from nature and develop place attachment to certain landscape and seascape characteristics. With examples from farmland in Europe and biological corridors in China and Tanzania, we will discuss participatory methods for characterizing and mapping cultural ecosystem services related to land.

Moderator: Alejandra Echeverri, Postdoctoral Scholar

Dr. Echeverri is a postdoctoral scholar with the Natural Capital Project at Stanford University working under the supervision of Prof. Gretchen Daily. She researches ways to better integrate biodiversity and ecosystem services into national development policies of Colombia and Costa Rica.

Panelist: Nora Fagerholm, Adjunct Professor, Department of Geography and Geology, University of Turku, Finland

Dr. Fagerholm is a human geographer and landscape researcher whose research has for the most part focused on participatory spatial plannning and applying GIS for participation in place-based assessments of local experiential knowledge on ecosystem services and landscapes.

Panelist: Elisa Oteros-Rozas, Chair on Agroecology and Food Systems, University of Victoria, Canada

Dr. Oteros-Rozas' research activity is intertwined with an active participation in organized civil society spaces such as “Ecologistas en Acción·, the Spanish Platform for Pastoralism and Extensive Livestock and “Ganaderas en Red”.
