Nature-Based Solutions and Water: Navigating the Transition to a Climate-Resilient Future

Under the impacts of climate change, natural capital can provide important adaptation benefits for communities. There is growing demand for nature-based solutions to help communities navigate economic growth while building climate resilience. How can international commitments, finance mechanisms, and the private sector provide support? In this session, researchers and leaders from the public and private sector will showcase innovative research, policy, and finance approaches that are driving the shift to a climate-resilient future. A particular focus will be on the role of nature-based solutions for increasing water security as a critical mode of climate adaptation.
This session will be presented in English with live, simultaneous translation into Spanish.

Introductory Speaker: Gretchen Daily, Co-Founder and Faculty Director of the Natural Capital Project
Gretchen co-founded the Natural Capital Project in 2005. She serves as NatCap’s Faculty Director, as well as the Bing Professor of Environmental Science in the Department of Biology at Stanford University, the Director of the Center for Conservation Biology at Stanford, and a senior fellow at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment.
Moderator: Carter Brandon, Senior Fellow, World Resources Institute
Carter Brandon joined World Resources Institute in February 2019 to lead work on the economics and finance of climate change adaptation in support of the Global Commission on Adaptation. Prior to that, he had a 24-year career at the World Bank, culminating as Global Lead Economist for Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change.
Speaker: Kate Brauman, AAAS Science Technology Policy Fellow and Lead Scientist, Global Water Initiative, University of Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment
Kate Brauman is currently a Water and Climate Resilience Fellow at the US Department of Defense through a AAAS Science Technology Policy Fellowship. As part of this fellowship, she is on leave from the University of Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment, where she was the Lead Scientist for the Global Water Initiative.
Speaker: John Matthews, Director, Alliance for Global Water Adaptation
John H. Matthews is the Coordinator and co-founder of the Alliance for Global Water Adaptation, which is hosted by the World Bank and the Stockholm International Water Institute. His work blends technical and policy knowledge for climate adaptation and water management for practical implementation.
Session Lead/Speaker: Adrian Vogl, Lead Scientist, The Natural Capital Project, Stanford University
Adrian Vogl leads NatCap’s Securing Freshwater initiative at Stanford. Adrian works across the spectrum of researchers, policymakers, and civil society groups in Latin America, the Himalayas, the US, and Africa to advance the science and practice of ecosystem services and nature-based solutions for water security. Her focus is on how land and forest management impact water resources, particularly in the face of changing and uncertain climate conditions.
