Projects

Developing and testing a modeling approach to assess the flood mitigation service provided by natural ecosystems. Partners: Stanford Urban Resilience Initiative, WWF Myanmar, Stockholm Environmental Institute.
Worked on the design and placement of restored Oyster Reefs in Mobile Bay. Partner: The Nature Conservancy.
Project Category:
Assessing urban ecosystem services and promote nature-based solutions in urban planning in China using InVEST tools. 1 of 5 Chinese pilot cities. Partner: Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Project Category:

Through investments of more than US$150 billion in conservation and development initiatives since 2000, China has established the highest rate of reforestation worldwide, while alleviating poverty in rural inland regions.

Developing and applying decision support tool to help US federal and state agencies to better coordinate large-scale land management plans for the monarch butterfly.

Informing spatial planning in Kalimantan at island and district levels, motivating the designation of the Heart of Borneo as a Strategic National Area to protect environmental values, and generating funding for management of the area. Partner: WWF.

Conducting stakeholder engagement and modeling of land use decisions on surface and marine water quality. Project goals include estimating the recreational and non-use value impacts of future land use scenarios in a large watershed that crosses State boundaries and providing guidance to prioritize conservation activity. Partners: Massachusetts Audubon, University of Rhode Island.

Worked to prioritize conservation and restoration activities in Escambia and Pensacola Counties to achieve multiple watershed and coastal objectives, including reduction in erosion and flooding, nitrogen and phosphorous retention, nature-based recreation, and near-shore fisheries. Partner: The Nature Conservancy.
Project Category:
Assessing urban ecosystem services and promote nature-based solutions in urban planning in China using InVEST tools. 1 of 5 Chinese pilot cities. Partner: Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Project Category:

Worked to understand linkages between land and sea--specifically, how activities in coastal watersheds might impact the delivery of ecosystem services from marine systems. Partner: The Nature Conservancy.

Working to 1) target and value investments in natural capital and watershed management 2) to reduce excess sediment to the Mangla Reservoir 3) build capacity for ongoing assessment, monitoring, and targeting. Partners: World Bank, Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority, Forest Department, and Ministry of Agriculture.
Project Category:
Developed watershed management plans to conserve the ecosystems of coastal watersheds in the southern Gulf of California and the Gulf of Mexico in the face of climate change. Partners: Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature, National Institute for Ecology and Climate Change, National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR), National Protected Areas Commission (CONANP), and Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources
Project Category:

Worked to understand and communicate (through coastalresilience.org) where coastal habitats provide protection from sea-level rise and storms in the Gulf of Mexico and along the US east coast. Partner: The Nature Conservancy.

Project Category:
Assessing urban ecosystem services and promote nature-based solutions in urban planning in China using InVEST tools. 1 of 5 Chinese pilot cities. Partner: Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Project Category:
Developed all of the original Marine InVEST tools to use nature's benefits to inform coastal plans for Barkley and Clayoquot Sounds. Partner: West Coast Aquatic.
Working to integrate ecosystem service considerations into integrated spatial planning in Mondulkiri Province in Cambodia. Partner: WWF.
Working to 1) target and value investments in natural capital and watershed management to reduce excess sediment to the Kaligandaki A hydropower facility; and 2) build capacity for ongoing assessment, monitoring, and targeting. Partners: World Bank, the Nepal Electricity Authority, the Dept of Soil Conservation & Watershed Management.
Project Category:
Using NatCap tools for targeting conservation and restoration to maximize ecosystem services, calculating return on investment, and building capacity. Partners: FUNDECOR and Agua Tica Water Fund
