Hydropower in the Himalayas, Nepal

Main content start

Working to 1) target and value investments in natural capital and watershed management to reduce excess sediment to the Kaligandaki, a hydropower facility; and 2) build capacity for ongoing assessment, monitoring, and targeting.

We provided recommendations to the Department of Forests and Soil Conservation and the Soil Conservation and Watershed Management Office for capacity and data improvements needed to scale up ecosystem services-informed watershed management. A "Centre of Excellence" for watershed management was proposed to be developed in the Ministry of Forests and supported by the World Bank. The project also spurred action in the World Bank to develop guidance on natural capital for landslide management and watershed management, which have been disseminated widely, especially in the Southeast Asia region (see also this e-book).

Collaborators: World Bank, the Nepal Electricity Authority, the Dept of Soil Conservation & Watershed Management.
